Description
The German Peasants' War of 1525, the looting of the troops of the Elector Maurice of Saxony in 1552 and the great fire of 1593 inflicted considerable damage on the abbey, which saw a sharp decline with the consequent great decline in the number of monks (attested in some years the presence of only three monks).
In the early seventeenth century, however, the abbey received new impetus under Abbot Edmund Zoz (1690-1699), who began the reconstruction of the buildings by erecting the two characteristic towers with an "onion" roof that distinguish the abbey in the surrounding landscape. At the beginning of the eighteenth century the famous architect Georg Anton Gumpp continued the work by undertaking a total reconstruction of the complex and giving it that baroque aspect that still characterizes it today. In the second half of the eighteenth century it became an important musical centre, which saw the presence of illustrious musicians such as Father Stamser, Stefan Paluselli, or the Viennese Johann Michael Malzat.
