Description
The abbey was founded in 1273 by Mainardo II of Tyrol-Gorizia and his wife Elisabeth of Bavaria (widow of Emperor Conrad IV) in memory of their son Conradin of Swabia, beheaded in Naples in 1268. The monastery was entrusted to the Cistercian monks , a subsidiary of Morimond Abbey, who built it in the late Romanesque style. Initially twelve monks plus five lay brothers populated the abbey, under the guidance of Abbot Henry of Honstätten, coming from their mother monastery of Kaisheim in Swabia. The counts of Tyrol incorporated various parishes into the abbey and elected it as a burial place, replacing it with the parish church of Bolzano initially intended for this function. Soon the abbey became an important economic center of the region, so much so that from 1347 to 1350, it housed the imperial regalia.
