Description
The abbey was founded in 782 by the Duke of Bavaria Tassilone III. In 788 it became an imperial Carolingian abbey. Ludwig II the German, king of Bavaria, Carinthia and Bohemia, placed his daughter Ermengarde as abbess. The abbey subsequently experienced terrible times due to the incursions of the Hungarians, who destroyed it several times between the 9th and 10th centuries. It was totally rebuilt between 1728 and 1732. During the secularization of ecclesiastical property, which took place in Bavaria in the period from 1803 to 1835, the abbey was suppressed, but the abbey church remained. As no buyer was found for the abbey buildings, the nuns who lived there were allowed to remain. In 1836, under the reign of Ludwig I, King of Bavaria, the abbey was reconstituted on condition that the Benedictine nuns who lived there justified their presence by opening schools. Since 1837 they have dedicated themselves to the training and education of young girls. In 1901 the convent was raised to the level of an abbey.
