Description
The abbey church, dedicated to Our Lady, originally a Romanesque basilica, was consecrated for the first time in 1284. Between 1729 and 1733 it was rebuilt in Baroque style by the famous architect Georg Anton Gumpp, who reduced it to a single nave, with a transept and high side chapels.
The vault of the church is a precious work composed of frescoes, with the Life of the Virgin, executed in 1734 by Johann Georg Wolcker from Augsburg, framed by beautiful stuccos by Franz Xaver Feuchtmayr of the Wessobrunn School.
At the beginning of the nave, the Fürstengruft opens in the floor, the crypt of the Princes of Tyrol, with the twelve gilded statues of the characters buried there, including those of Mainard II of Tyrol-Gorizia, his wife Elizabeth of Bavaria, Federico Tascavuota, Sigismund of Austria and Bianca Maria Sforza, second wife of Emperor Maximilian I of Habsburg. The crypt is dominated by the large group of the Crucifixion. The set was made by Andreas Tamasch in 1681.
