Description
Stams Abbey (German: Stift Stams) is a Cistercian monastery (Zisterziensterabtei) which stands alone overlooking a vast clearing in the municipality of Stams, in the Tyrol region, in Austria. It belongs to the diocese of Innsbruck and in 1984 the abbey church of Our Lady was elevated to the rank of minor basilica by Pope John Paul II. It represents one of the most important abbeys in Austria, and one of the highest examples of Baroque architecture in the Alpine area.
