Description
It may only be a small church, but bigger isnβt always better when it comes to these things. Containing some of the oldest frescoes in the entire country, the church over a stone bridge at Bohinj is a monument of national importance built before 1300. Whilst it receives its first official written mention in the 15th century, it is almost certainly older and it spans a number of different architectural periods from the Romanesque all the way to Baroque. The church is choc-full of fascination, whether it is the three wooden altars made at various points from 15th to 17th century, the Gothic entryway or the baroque bell tower; there is something of interest at almost every turn. It is the frescoes that steal the show however, featuring among them a multi-layered depiction of St Christopher and a representation of Cain and Abel, complete with rare white devils. It takes a lot to challenge the majesty of the lake for main event status, but the Church of St John the Baptist comes dangerously close.
