Description
The 15th century castle is the work of the architect Juan Carrera, and the result of a reform carried out on a defensive construction of Roman origin. Part of the Roman wall was removed, the materials for the new construction were reused and an existing ashlar stone tower was joined to the fortress and modified. According to Cooper, it could date from the 13th century or the 14th century . The keep is pentagonal and in front of it a pre-wall was built. Behind it is a barrier formed by two towers, one round and the other square that frame the door and known as El Castillejo,which is the entrance to the fortress. The construction in ashlars, and at the top a crown of false machicolations. The great tower has semi-cylindrical gates and the entrance from its defensive terrace. The tower is connected to the list and the walkway of the wall. The main outbuildings are composed of wooden ceilings and barrel vaults and would grow. Despite its military characteristics, it had the character of a stately fortress
