Description
Marca Trevigiana (this is how the area around the city of Treviso has been referred to since the 13th century) is an area rich in art and history.
One of the destinations that is absolutely worth visiting is the Molinetto della Croda, near the city of Refrontolo, in the valley of the River Lierza. It is an ancient watermill dating back to the 16th century. The building was erected in stages, and the foundations of the original building rest on the bare rock, called 'croda' (literally crag).
Subsequent extensions added further rooms for the housing of the humble families of the mill workers, stricken by poverty and living under the constant menace of river swells and devastating floods, as in recent times, during 1941 and 1953.The old mill stopped grinding flour in 1953, and subsequently remained for a few years uninhabited and in a state of desolating neglect. Recently, it has been subjected to thorough restoration work, which has preserved the characteristics of the building. Inside the mill you can now visit the machinery with the characteristic mill (still working) and the various floors of the building that housed the families that oversaw its operations over the years.
The mill also inspired artists with numerous paintings portraying it and also poets. It also featured in the 1977 movie 'Mogliamante' starring Marcello Mastroianni and Laura Antonelli.
