The fishing activity
Fishermen have lived in Burano since the very moment of its foundation. The marshland was no good for farming so fishing soon became the main activity for the early population. The former fishing techniques involved nets and harpoons and the "chebe", sort of cages that were kept under the water for a long period, to naturally trap small fishes and crabs.Fish was usually used as currency which they could trade for wood, wheat, and wine, and for centuries remained the main source of income for the island.Traditional practices still take place today, but the number of the fishermen decreased a lot during the centuries. Nowadays in the island we count around 450 fishermen, that are assembled in a cooperative. The fresh and delicious seafood fished by the Buranelli in the lagoon is sold at Rialto Market on daily basis, and can be found every day on the tables of the many families and restaurants located in the island.
