Description
View of old stone house over creek in Bayeux with steeples of Bayeux cathedral (Norman Gothic style) in background.
Bayeux is most famous for being the home of the Bayeux Tapestry which chronicles the Battle of Hastings led by William the Conqueror. The quaint town was the first to be liberated in World War II and was fortunate not to have been damaged during the war.
Bayeux has many monumental buildings, that best can be seen by taking a city tour. Walking (guided or not) through the streets, squares and alleys of Bayeux, look left and right for the ancient buildings or historical landmarks. There are many and with a book telling you about them all (or a tourist guide) you get realy in touch with this beautiful Normandian town. The scenic views over the little river Aure are already wonderful, but added with various beautiful "vakwerk" houses in town and some special memories from the past, Bayeux is definately worth a few of your hours of walking and gazing around.
