Description
Bagno Vignoni is a small medieval Tuscan hamlet located in the heart of the Natural Parc of the Val D’Orcia. Thanks to its proximity to the Via Francigena (the main road followed by the pilgrims towards Rome since the ancient times), its natural thermal springs are known and used since the roman period. The village main square, Piazza delle sorgenti (Square of the springs), is characterized by the huge ancient thermal pool belonging to the year 500. The water comes directly from the volcanic spring at a temperature of 52°C and it has been used by the Etruscans and the Romans and later on by the Pope Pio II Piccolomini and Lorenzo dè Medicis. Many big names of history and art passed from here throughout the centuries to benefit of these curative waters. Nowadays bathing in the square is forbidden but there are other thermal pools that people can use. From this central pool the hot water flows towards an area called Parco dei Mulini, Park of the Mills, because here are located four medieval mills carved in stone which, thanks to this perennial spring, were working also in the summertime when the rivers are dry and all the other mills were not functioning. The small hamlet was part of the Castle of the Amerighi family already renowned in the IX century. Nowadays the ruins of the castle (Vignoni Alto) dominate the village which has its structure pretty unchanged from the medieval times.
